NOAA RELEASES DRAFT (UNBELIEVABLE) POLLOCK STOCK ASSESSMENT

QUOTE: This week NOAA fisheries researchers presented scientific information to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council's Groundfish Plan Team that will underpin later decisions on harvest levels for Eastern Bering Sea pollock.

The scientific analysis points toward a 2010 allowable biological catch of Eastern Bering Sea pollock that would be similar to the allowable biological catch that was set for 2009 — 815,000 tons. CLICK HERE TO READ

The NPFMC is set to meet in Anchorage AK in December to establish the recommendation by the government scientists, and generally they do get to have their cake and eat it too regardless of the decline of every single living specie dependent on the Bering for basic life.

Over fished

A recent survey by NOAA shows fewer Pollock in the Bering Sea. Really? After years of relentlessly dragging nets across the sea the industry folks are calling this a cyclical fluctuation, go figure. Read article here from the Ak journal of commerce.

Ocean Policy Task Force Meeting

The Ocean Policy Task Force will be holding a public meeting, the first one mind you, on August 21st at the Dena'ina Center in Anchorage Alaska, 12-4:30PM.
Some of the big wigs attending will be NOAA Admin Jane Lubchenco and some Senior level Obama officials.
Decisions made by the task force will shape how our ocean resources are managed so swing on down and voice your opinions. Here's a great piece from the Anonymous Bloggers site.

Click on the link below for some audio from APRN. Contaminants my arse, competition with the mega trawl fleet is the reason behind the declines, nothing more nothing less.

Trickle down

The Anchorage Daily News reports on an increase in bear attacks. Click here to read.
Once Salmon, a primary source of food for the bears begin to wither they then seek other sources from garbage to humans and whatever else in between.
Northern Fur Seal down 33% since 1977 and pup production down 4% every year and as high as 15% in one year, Steller Sea Lions endangered, Sea Otters declined, Harbor Seals down 80% and all are in a steady decline with millions spent on studies always blaming climatic conditions and for years the Pollock quota doubled and tripled as did bycatch.
Bycatch obviously has a enormous impact on the food chain.
Nothing will change for the better until industrialized trawling is stopped.

Case in point

Here's the latest from the Tundra Drums. This is just the tip of the iceburg. Everything has a trickle down effect, it starts with the most remote and eventually hits at the heart and it has already, low numbers, cutbacks, restrictions. Billions and billions of dollars taken away from communities and lifestyles and dreams are shattered. All for fishsticks and patties made from Pollock.

Gov

Guess you all heard by now Palin has resigned. What does this mean for our fisheries?
Dammed if I know but one thing I do know is it cannot be predetermined to sit on ones hands when it comes to the meat and potatoes of it such as Palin and Lloyd agreed to do from the onset, they made a decision to stay out of fishery politics.
The Bering Sea is considered the breadbasket of our nation and should be treated accordingly, with respect, not with intentions of greed and plunder for a deep fried fish-stick economy, the same applies for the Arctic and Gulf waters.
There's certainly enough Halibut for both hook & line commercial and sport fisheries and without doubt many other species available for other fisheries as evidenced by the documented bycatch from the mega-trawl fleet, but with out change many ports will continue to dwindle and those that haven't can expect it, it's inevitable.
Fisheries is one of our greatest resources that cannot and should not be ignored while outside interests trump all over us.
Sean Parnell is currently considered to be Palins replacement, I hope change is in order.

Civil Disobedience

I ran across an article in the Tundra Drums titled "Civil Disobedience on the Yukon; Marshall Fisherman Ignore Closure" If that's what this is called than what do you call it when the Trawlers plunder like they do? Read the Tundra Drums article here.
Strangely some news sources state that Palin used "twitter" to tweet 50% of subsistence needs have been met when apparently it hasn't.

Wanton Waste

Ah the drum beat continues. More news from Nick Andrew Here
Quote from letter in the Tundra Drums: "We along the Yukon River are casualties of an unjust system that protects big enterprise and a state government that is unsympathetic to the rural people of Alaska, primarily the Native community".
Hello Palin? HELLO!??
